The Wang 701 Output Writer is a Wang-modified IBM Selectric I (Model 72)
electric typewriter. Wang's modifications involve adding numerous solenoids and
linkages that allow the solenoids to electrically operate the typewriter.
The modifications require a spacer between the base of the typewriter and
the main body to accommodate the additional room required for the solenoid
mechanisms. Along with the mechanical modifications, a circuit board
in the base of the typewriter serves to translate the codes coming from
the 700-series calculator connected to the 701 into the necessary solenoid
and timing actions to drive the typewriter. Special program codes on the
700-series calculator allow full control of the typewriter to allow
formatted output to be generated.
